MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926).
L.A.S. "your old Claude", London 12 March 1901, to HIS WIFE ALICE| 8 pages in-8 on the letterhead of the Savoy Hotel.
He is better and has slept well, and has less fever: "so you have no worries about having two or three days' rest in the room and he will not appear there. But I am terribly bored and find time very long. Alice's letter does not cheer him up: "you write me frightening and desperate letters, and you do not admit that I can also be unreasonable and exaggerate [...] I have, however, been lucid enough to do everything to calm you during these days of anguish". SARGENT is still bedridden: "I am up but I can't do anything, I don't even look at my poor paintings, I hope to take them back in two days"... According to the doctor, it is not influenza, "but simply a little catharsis and rheumatism caused by a draught"... He goes to bed... "I kiss you as I love you and all your poor old man who has no veins. Your old Claude"...
