"We are all three well, but like all Parisians we look like starving people, for we have been dying of hunger for nearly a month, and it seems to me to be going on much too long... Yesterday he received a letter from his wife Suzanne, dated December 28: "It had been four months since a line of her writing had reached me. These ladies were doing well. [...] Our common friends are all in more or less good condition but alive, that is already something"...
