VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896)
Autograph letter signed "Monsieur JOSSE" by Paul Verlaine addressed to "Monsieur le directeur" of the review "Art et Critique" directed by the Julien brothers, one of whom was Verlaine's doctor. 2 pages in-8 in ink (folds and stains).
Amusing letter from Verlaine, which he signs Monsieur Josse, in which he writes to the review to reproach it for not opening its columns enough to poetry. He acknowledges the exception which "only confirms the rule" of the publication of a poem by Stéphane
Mallarmé "Le Guignon"... "I don't believe that the public has been displeased with this "re-guignon", I believe quite the opposite. Why did you not continue, I wonder, I ask you, Mr. Director!
Of course, the poets who would send you copies do not have the arrogant claim to offer you no such thing| but in fact the "Art et Critique" committee would certainly find, among these submissions, passable verses, and curious by the diversity of the inspiration, because all the schools could come knocking at your door. And without going far, some of your ordinary prose writers would not look bad in their twin incarnation as assemblers of rhythms and rhymes. I will name only Verlaine| the others will name themselves..."
