SAND George (1804-1876)
Autograph letter signed to René BIEMONT, La Châtre, Nohant, March 14, 1863| 3 pages in-8, with autograph envelope.
Magnificent letter from Sand to a writer who had sent her his book.
Sand encourages her correspondent to pursue his project. "Sir,
Your little book is very original and you show in it qualities of talent that will develop if you look ahead. Obermann and his little fi ls the monk belong to the past. They are real and the shy John is well drawn. There is greatness and truth in this exceptional guy.
But Constant d'Heurs is too passive of events. He should react against this helpless man and cure him or pity him more. Instead of accepting these benefits, he should tear him away from the cloister, for this cloister is ill-motivated and fi nishes too abruptly and too tightly a life that had only sinned through excessive devotion. Nevertheless, there are some beautiful pages, very touching, and a very good analysis of the strange feelings of
Jean. This strangeness has real grandeur and the type may have existed.
Do not complain about the thankless work and accept it as a good thing. Three quarters of life sacrificed to some duty makes the last quarter very strong and very much alive. It is very good to be attached to poetry and upset in the possession of a beautiful dream. As soon as one can savour it without slackening, it fades or becomes confused. I tell you this from experience. One is never happier and more inspired than when one believes one has no time to be so. Le Petit-fi ls d'Obermann is a novel by
René Biémont published in 1863 by Beau.
