RIMBAUD ARTHUR (1854-1891)
Autograph receipt signed by RIMBAUD: "For the account of Mr Savouré, I received today from the Harar Bank the sum of Six hundred and sixty five thalaris (thalaris 665) Harar Monday January 21, 1889 For Mr Savouré. Rimbaud"
Autograph receipt written by Arthur Rimbaud during his stay in
Africa as an arms and coffee merchant.
After his explosive adventure with Verlaine, Rimbaud abruptly changed his orientation in 1874. It brought him through the whole Europe, then to Java where he arrived, in 1876, with mercenaries recruited by the Dutch colonial army. In 1879-1880, he was known to be in Cyprus. He then made his first stay in Aden. He then worked for the Bardey brothers' agency, who entrusted him with the supervision of a coffee sorting workshop.
His employers quickly promoted him to the director of their agency in
Harar in Ethiopia, where he traded in ivory, coffee, gold, musk and skins. This receipt, witness of an important period of Rimbaud's life, concerns a delivery of more than 2000 rifles to Menelik, king of Choah.
Rare document in a beautiful calligraphy.
