PROUST Marcel (1871-1922)
Autograph letter signed, Paris [1911]| 2 ½ pages in-12.
Proust attempts to discuss the purchase of shares and where the transaction should take place: "Mr. Nahmias, whom I take the liberty of sending to you, has convinced me to buy a thousand Spassyz-Pappel on the terms he will set out for you if you are kind enough to receive him. Being myself worse than ignorant of the correct language of the stock market, I would not know how to do it. I believe it will be easier if the transaction is made through Industrial Credit. In any case, since time is short and I will not be here tomorrow, I am sending you herewith the drafts to be kept in case they are needed [to cover the amount of this purchase]". He added in a postscript: "It is better to do this transaction tomorrow, in the stock market on Monday. (Today, when you have the word)'.
In his letter, Proust mentions M. Nahmias, whom he employs as his secretary. However, Albert Nahmias was not only a secretary, typing Proust's manuscripts.
Instead, he was betting and speculating on the stock market on behalf of Proust with his absolute confidence, who had amorous feelings towards him. Indeed, Proust was so enamoured of Nahmias that he wrote to her: "What can I do to change my sex, my face and my age, to take on the appearance of a young and pretty woman in order to kiss you with all my heart" (White, Marcel Proust: A Life).
