PROVENANCE Private collection, France "In all the balls, cabarets, café-concerts, circuses and theatres, every evening, according to an established order, Lautrec's pencil fixes the features and silhouettes of all this world of amusement, teeming with free life, and which provides his gifts of 'ruthless' and relentless observation with the best, the liveliest and the most unexpected of his models [? [...] And Lautrec, unceasingly, observes and notes, capturing gestures and movements of his models now so alive, on notebooks, sometimes on scraps of paper drawn from the depths of his pockets."
