In 1979, the US Army launched a tender for a new off-road vehicle, as it had done at the beginning of the Second World War for the Jeep. Code name? High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HMMWV (phonetically humvee). AM General's Metal Fabricating Division won the contract, and construction of the most famous and disproportionate military 4x4 began in 1984. The production is initially exclusively military, and it is said that it is Arnold Schwarzenegger who asked the management of AM General to develop a civilian version. It is him who will take delivery of the first two examples, named Hummer, in 1992. In 2000, at the Detroit Auto Show, the General Motors Corp. which bought the rights from AM General, presented the Hummer H2 SUV Concept, which went into production in early 2002. A genuine adventurer that goes where others don't ("A third of the earth is waiting for you", boasts the brochure), this 4x4 XXL, powered by the Vortec 6L V8 and 316 hp (then 325 hp from 2004), takes care of its occupants with electric leather seats, a Bose sound system or 3-zone air conditioning. In 2005, a new Hummer H2 cost 83 500 € in France, excluding options. The Hummer H2 presented here, in Slate Blue Metallic with Ebony leather interior, was purchased by its current owner around 2010. Acquired as a company vehicle, it was upgraded to a utility vehicle, and therefore approved for 4-seat, instead of the original 7-seat (the rear seats allowing the 7-seat configuration are nevertheless sold with the vehicle). Equipped with a 6l 325hp engine, it has been maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations (logbook missing, but invoices available) and has now a little less than 102,500 km. This is an unusual vehicle which will be ideal to go off the beaten track... or to tow your old car.
