In the 1970's, Mercedes occupied the coupe and cabriolet market with the famous R107 (SL roadster) and C107 (SLC coupe). But, in this generation, the coupe is neither more nor less than a roadster equipped with a welded hard-top, whose general line suffers from a too short platform (and a too long wheelbase) and a lesser elegance. For the 1980s, the managers of the Stuttgart firm went back to basics, designing a coupe ex nihilo on the (shortened) basis of the W126 sedan. And the C126 coupe will be for many, as the advertising brochures claim, "the best car in the world." The new Sonderklasse Einsprintzung Coupé (SEC, S-class, injection, coupe) is unveiled at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show. For its designer, Bruno Sacco (the brand's design boss from 1975 to 1999), "this car has the most beautiful face of any Mercedes I've ever been responsible for designing." On top of that (and unlike the R107 or the W126 sedan), it will only be available with V8 engines, of four different displacements. At its launch, the range consisted of the 380 SEC (204 bhp) and 500 SEC (231 bhp)| from 1986 onwards, anti-pollution standards and the fitting of catalytic converters, which resulted in a 20% loss of power, gave rise to the 420 SEC (218 bhp, replacing the 380 SEC) and the "big" 560 SEC (300 bhp). By October 1991, 74,000 Mercedes C126 SECs rolled off the production line. The 420 SEC we present, which marks the entry-level of this legendary S-Class coupe from 1986, is in a rather incredible original condition. It was in 2016 that its current owner acquired it. Since then, he has only driven it a few hundred miles. An oil change tag shows that the car was serviced at 135,106 km in December 2016, while it had 135,699 km on the day of our test drive. There is very little documentation with the car, but it is clear that the car was sold new in Germany. The car works perfectly well, and still has its new spare wheel and its tool kit, complete with original canvas. A rare condition that will delight the most demanding amateurs of the brand and the model.
