In the heart of the 60's, when English roadsters were still leading the sports car sales, Porsche unveiled its new 911 with the ambition to shake up the established order. At the same time, in Uncle Sam's country, rumours were circulating that convertibles were being considered for banning under the pretext that they would be dangerous in the event of a rollover... Porsche reacted by building an open 911 with a fixed roll bar and a removable rigid roof which, once folded up, could be stowed in the luggage compartment. The flexible rear window folds flat at the back and allows its occupants to be in the open air. Targa... That's how Porsche named this new kind of convertible, in homage to the six victories of the Stuttgart firm in the Targa Florio... But it's the S version, which appeared in 1967, that allowed the 911 to become a reference car before turning into a real myth. Until then, only a few fanatics were willing to pay full price for a small engine developing 130 hp whose main specificity was its road holding and a prohibitive price higher than that of a Jaguar E-type! The arrival on the market of the 911 S was to change the status of this unusual car to that of an extraordinary car...
True rarity, the car we have the chance to present is one of the 483 Porsche 911 Targa short chassis produced in 1967 with the 2.0l S engine of 160hp. Considered by some collectors as one of the most desirable versions of the early F series, this one has the particularity to have been delivered new by the French importer Sonauto in June 1967 in the Paris area. According to its important file, it was registered 817 UD 75 and its first owners lived in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. In 1981, the owners entrusted the car to the Atelier de Restauration Automobile in Sorigny, Touraine, for a complete overhaul of the bodywork, interior and mechanics. It is certainly at this time that the original Golf Blue paint was replaced by the Signal Red that it still wears today. It took no less than two years to complete this meticulous and carefully documented restoration.
A few years later, the car left the Paris region and was registered in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region in November 1984 in the name of a certain Mr Pénichon. The copy of the registration (2401 SG 64) and several maintenance invoices indicate that the car was not driven much at that time, a technical control of December 22, 1987 showing a mileage of 4 361 km. A few days later, on December 28, 1987 to be exact, its third owner, Mr Aldo Vasti, registered it in Castetnau Camblong without changing its registration! A well-known collector in the region, he kept it for nearly 14 years and drove it a little over 3,000 km. Here again, maintenance invoices from Vara Automobiles or Daverat, the former Ferrari specialist in Bayonne are attached to the file.
This car became part of the collection we are presenting in February 2001. Then looking for a 911 2.0l S Targa to replace his 911 G 3.2, it is while leafing through the magazine Rétroviseur (N°141/May 2000) that its current owner fell under the charm of this example. At the wheel, we were able to observe the good health of the flat-six, further amplified here by the Abarth dual outputs. The engine revs up to 6,500 rpm and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox (with the first gear shifted to the lower left) with precise gear changes thanks to a firmer gear lever lock than the original. As for the front drivetrain, it gets lighter as the speed increases, but forget about the pendular swing of the steering wheel (also original!). The steering remains precise, the running gear allows a "strong" driving in the entrance of curves and the suspension provides a good compromise even if the narrow original 4.5 inch rims remind us that this is a 911... Versatile but demanding at the limit!
