In the early 1950s, as Japan was just recovering from World War II and its defeat, a young entrepreneur by the name of Kiichiro Toyoda embarked on the automotive adventure. The family business (Toyota with a T, a letter easier to paint as a pictogram) has been particularly successful since the 1930s thanks to the manufacture of automatic looms sold worldwide. He had already built a few thousand cars (the famous Toyota A1) before the war, but it is now on an all-terrain vehicle that he throws his devotion, by copying outrageously the American Jeep M38A1. In July 1951 two Toyota "jeeps" climbed Mount Fuji in front of astonished journalists. The Toyota J (indicating an all-terrain vehicle in the manufacturer's nomenclature) was born! From 1955 to 1960, the Japanese brand developed its now legendary Land Cruiser with the 2 and 3 series. For the new decade, the design of the mythical off-roader was refined and gentler (everything is relative!) to address the general public, and not only the military and professionals. The 4 series, which also benefits from all the experience acquired since the 1950s, is going to launch Toyota at the level of the biggest manufacturers in the world. From 1960 to 1984, 1,500,000 Land Cruiser series 4 were sold all over the world. It is even the first Japanese vehicle built abroad, in the Brazilian Ford factory. The offer is extensive with three chassis lengths, several body variants (wagon, pick-up or van) and a multitude of successive engines, petrol (FJ) or diesel (BJ)
The Toyota that illustrates these pages is a 1979 BJ 40, in short chassis, which benefits from the iconic 3L 4-cylinder diesel engine that appeared in 1974. It was bought new by a member of the Beckers family, a Toyota dealer in Maaseik, Belgium, who kept it until 2014. The odometer shows just under 37,000 km, probably its original mileage as a tag shows a service in 1995 at 26,740 km. Incredible as it may seem, it also seems that the vehicle is in its original, near-new condition, testifying to its low usage and the great care taken in its use or storage. At a time when Range Rovers and Mercedes G-Class are going for crazy prices, this indestructible and legendary Toyota 4x4, witness of an era of conquest and great freedom, will delight the most demanding amateurs.
