HUGO Victor (1802-1885)
L.A.S. "Victor Hugo", Hauteville House November 2 [1866?], to Jules JANIN| 1 page in-8, address with countersignature "V.H.". (small missing in a corner by broken seal).
Beautiful letter of thanks to the critic of the Journal des Débats.
"Do you imagine what a feast it is for a poor man who has just crossed the furies of the ocean, to find, on touching land, this admirable and divine bouquet, twenty lines on Hugo signed Janin! I had this joy, my wellcome on my rock was told to me by you, as I wiped my forehead dripping with foam, a friendly hand handed me the Debates, and I was told: read. It is a profound sweetness to feel, despite the implacable absence, still a little loved, and loved by you.
- Loved by a great heart, loved by a great mind!"
