BALZAC Honoré de (1799-1850)
L.A.S. "de Balzac", [Sèvres 20 May 1840], to Frederick LEMAÎTRE| 1 page in-8, address.
About the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, where Balzac had given
Vautrin , played by the great Frédérick Lemaître, on 14 March 1840| the play was banned the next day, then Harel went bankrupt| but Balzac obtained permission from the Minister to stage a drama during a temporary reopening of the theatre under the direction of Francis Cornu.
He has not had the pleasure of meeting Francis Cornu, but he has often heard of him "from Mr Gérard [de nerVaL], author of Léo
Burckart who, I know, is the author of dramas and a member, I believe, of the Drama Committee| thus, without knowing him, I have no objection to him becoming the temporary Director of Porte St
Martin during the three months the Minister gave him to stage my play".
