Set of two lacquer boxes in the shape of a koto, a plucked musical instrument of traditional Japanese music, decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a black background with flowering branches and birds in flight appearing under the strings of the koto, the ends decorated with geometric and stylized motifs| the interior and the base in nashiji lacquer These boxes were intended to receive the incense pellets used during this ceremony.
