GEORGE ENGLEHEART (1750-1829 ROYAUME-UNI)
Miniature portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte in profile dressed as a general of the Republic, very finely executed under a curved glass, beveled and circled with floral decoration. In a bronze medallion engraved on the reverse in cursive letters "N.Buonaparte, first Consul of the French Rep, G.Engleheart". We believe that this miniature was made shortly after Bonaparte's appointment as First Consul. That the artist made this work after a representation of Bonaparte in general's uniform, those representing him as First Consul not having been sufficiently diffused until then. George Engleheart was one of the greatest English miniaturists of his time and portrayed aristocrats and most of the courtiers of the English Court. England, early 19th century
62 x 55 mm (Minor scratches from use)
