PIERRE-JOSEPH-CÉLESTIN FRANCOIS Allegory of the Battle of Grand Port in August 1810 Oil on canvas 59 x 49 cm Pierre-Joseph-Célestin François was a Belgian painter who entered the studio of the painter Pierre Balthasar de Blocq (active between 1754 and 1795) at the age of 11 before entering the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Originally from Wallonia, he grew up in a region dominated by the Holy Roman Empire, whose artistic references left their mark on him. During his training and then his career, he visited Italy twice, between 1778 and 1781 and again between 1789 and 1792. It was probably there that he discovered the neoclassicism of Anton Raphaël Mengs (1728/1779), then known as one of the greatest painters in Europe. Following the theories of Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768), the Bohemian painter advocated a return to the beautiful antique, to the simple, noble manner, and to the observation of the drawings of Raphael (1483-1520). François' painting expresses these references: the artist has seen the antique and is inspired by it in the anatomy of his figures| he has also looked at Raphael and the Italian masters of the 16th century, from whom he retains the theatricality of the poses, a powerful upward movement, and the use of precious, vivid and varied colours. We find these elements in another composition by the painter, the Allegory of the Concordat (fig.1| 1802, Malmaison, châteaux of Malmaison and Bois-Préau). After the French Revolution in 1789, there was a revival of allegorical discourse to celebrate the glories of the sovereign people at first, and then, more occasionally, of the ruling power. Here, the Battle of Grand Port is identifiable by the presence of the English flag grounded against the reefs at the bottom of the composition and the dismasted ship on the left in the background. A naval confrontation between the France of Napoleon I and the England of George III, this allegory commemorates the Empire's one and only victory at sea over the dreaded British fleet. In this month of August 1810, the confrontation off the coast of Mauritius (Isle de France), the French frigates the Bellone and the Minerve as well as three other ships led by Captain Guy-Victor Duperré (1775-1846) opposed the four British frigates, the HMS Sirius, the HMS Iphigenia, the HMS Magicienne and the HMS Nereide led by Captain Nesbit Willoughby (1777- 849). After having recaptured the Island of Reunion (Isle Bonaparte) on the 13th August, the British attacked the Island of the Passage, with the aim of gradually conquering the whole of this area of the Pacific, dominated by the French Empire. Victorious on the 20th August, the French captured the last English survivors. This was the only naval victory to appear on the Arc de Triomphe, and imperial propaganda did not remember the loss of the Isle de France four months later, a territory dominated by the British until 1968.

Originaire de Wallonie, il grandit dans une région alors dominée par le Saint-Empire romain germanique dont les référentiels artistiques le marqueront. Au cours de sa formation puis de sa carrière, il séjourne par deux fois en Italie, entre 1778 et 1781 puis entre 1789 et 1792. C'est là sans doute qu'il découvre le néoclassicisme d'Anton Raphaël Mengs (1728/1779), connu alors comme l'un des plus grands peintres d'Europe. Dans la suite des théories de Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768), le peintre originaire de Bohême prône un retour au bel antique, à la manière simple, noble, ainsi qu'à l'observation des dessins de Raphaël (1483-1520). La peinture de François exprime ces références : l'artiste a vu l'antique, il s'en inspire dans les anatomies de ses personnages| il a par ailleurs regardé Raphaël et les maîtres italiens du XVIe siècle dont il retient la théâtralité des poses, un puissant mouvement ascensionnel, l'emploi de couleurs précieuses, vives, variées. Ces éléments, nous les retrouvons dans une autre composition du peintre, l'Allégorie du Concordat (fig.1| 1802, Malmaison, châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau). Après la Révolution française en 1789, on observe un regain du discours allégorique pour célébrer les gloires du peuple souverain dans un premier temps, puis plus ponctuellement, du pouvoir en place. Ici, la bataille de Grand Port est identifiable par la présence du drapeau anglais s'échouant en bas de composition contre les récifs et le navire démâté à gauche dans l'arrière-plan. Affrontement naval entre la France de Napoléon Ier et l'Angleterre de George III, cette allégorie com­mémore la seule et unique victoire en mer de l'Empire sur la tant redoutée flotte britannique. En ce mois d'août 1810, l'affrontement oppose au large de l'Ile Maurice (Isle de France), les frégates françaises la Bellone et la Minerve ainsi que trois autres navires menés par le capitaine Guy-Victor Duperré (1775-1846) aux quatre frégates britan­niques, le HMS Sirius, le HMS Iphigenia, le HMS Magicienne et le HMS Nereide menées par le capitaine Nesbit Willoughby (1777- 849). Après avoir repris le 13 août l'Ile de la Réunion (Isle Bonaparte), les Britanniques s'attaquent à l'Ile de la Passe, ayant à dessein de progressivement conquérir l'entièreté de cette zone du Pacifique, dominée par l'Empire français. Victorieux le 20 août, les Français capturent les derniers survivants anglais. Seule victoire militaire navale à figurer sur l'Arc de Triomphe, la propagande impériale ne retient pas la perte de l'Isle de France quatre mois plus tard, terri­toire dominé par les Britanniques jusqu'en 1968.

École FRANÇAISE de la fin du XVIIIe siècle A Just and Perfect Work or The Path of Masonry and its Initiates Oil on canvas 95.4 x 121.8 cm The theory of the origins of Freemasonry places it in ancient Egypt. More probably, it only really appeared in the Middle Ages, on the great medieval cathedral sites. Small lodges were temporarily installed next to the cathedrals, where the masons met, and where they exchanged ideas and lived their daily lives. At that time, Freemasonry was called "operative". Subsequently, in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was in Scotland that the first members unrelated to the profession, often local notables, were admitted to the operative lodges. The transition would then have been made slowly towards the Freemasonry known as "speculative". In reality, it was at the beginning of the eighteenth century in London, that a group of local scholars, fond of philosophy, neoplatonism and probably having a certain attraction for the mystical, decided to form. They borrowed certain symbolic and ritual forms from the Scottish masons they had met, and thus helped build the identity of their own society. In 1717, the Grand Lodge of England was created in London and in 1725, a lodge was founded in Paris by the British in the Saint-Germain district. It is precisely this moment of the arrival of Freemasonry in France that our painting illustrates and which, when read, leads us along the path of the initiate. To the left of the composition is a ship flying the English flag and whose masts form a compass. Further ahead, a rowboat approaches the shore with people on board carrying fire, a symbol of light. Without this light, which refers to knowledge, the impetus represented with an effect of transparency in front of the temple, will not be able to penetrate it. Further to the right, the non-initiated receives the initiation from the figure in front of him. The work then begins, embodied by three individuals working around a crucible. Each of the faces bears one of the three colours of the great work: red, white and black. Everything here refers to Masonic symbols and rites. The construction itself takes up the symbolism of the lodge carpet (fig. 1), originally drawn on the ground and then a panel that became mobile, present in the Temple. As in this one, we find the starry sky, the sun, the moon, the compass, the columns, the temple, the tools of the trade... The Empire was particularly marked by the presence in the lodge of important people including Napoleon's brothers, Joseph, Louis, Jerome| his ministers also like Joseph Fouché, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand or Claude Ambroise Régnier.

École FRANÇAISE de la fin du XVIIIe siècle Une oeuvre juste et parfaite ou Le chemin de la Maçonnerie et de ses initiés Huile sur toile 95,4 x 121,8 cm La théorie des origines de la franc-maçon­nerie la situe dans l'Égypte ancienne. Plus probablement, elle n'a véritablement fait son apparition qu'au Moyen Age, sur les grands chantiers médiévaux des cathédrales. Adossées à ces dernières étaient provisoirement installées de petites loges où les maçons se retrouvaient, à la fois lieux d'échanges et de vie quotidienne. À ce moment, la franc-maçonnerie était dite «opérative». Par la suite aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, c'est en Écosse que les premiers membres sans rapport avec la profession, souvent des notables locaux, auraient été admis dans les loges opéra­tives. La transition se serait alors doucement faite vers la franc-maçonnerie dite «spéculative». En réalité, c'est au début du XVIIIe siècle à Londres, qu'un regroupement d'érudits locaux, férus de philosophie, de néoplatonisme et ayant sans doute un attrait certain pour le mystique, décida de se former. Ils empruntèrent alors aux maçons écossais qu'ils avaient pu avoir l'occasion de rencontrer, certaines formes symboliques et rituelles, participant de la construction identitaire de leur propre société. En 1717, la Grande Loge d'Angleterre est créée à Londres et dès 1725, une loge est fondée à Paris par des Britanniques dans le quartier de Saint-Germain. C'est précisément cet instant de l'arrivée de la franc-maçonnerie en France que notre tableau illustre et dont la lecture nous fait suivre le chemin de l'initié. À gauche de la composition se trouve un navire arborant le pavillon anglais et dont les mâts forment un compas. Plus avant, une chaloupe approche du rivage avec à son bord des individus apportant le feu, symbole de lumière. Sans cette lumière qui renvoie à la connaissance, l'impétrant représenté avec un effet de transparence devant le temple, ne pourra y pénétrer. Plus à droite, le non-initié reçoit l'initiation du personnage en face de lui. Le travail commence ensuite, incarné par trois individus s'activant autour d'un creuset. Cha­cun des visages portent l'une des trois couleurs du grand oeuvre : le rouge, le blanc et le noir. Tout ici renvoie à des symboles et rites ma­çonniques. La construction même reprend la symbolique du tapis de loge (fig. 1), à l'origine dessiné au sol puis panneau devenu mobile, présent dans le Temple. Comme dans celui-ci, nous retrouvons la voûte céleste étoilée, le soleil, la lune, le compas, les colonnes, le temple, les outils du travail... L'Empire a été particulièrement marqué par la présence en loge de personnages importants dont les frères de Napoléon, Joseph, Louis, Jérôme| ses ministres également comme Joseph Fouché, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand ou encore Claude Ambroise Régnier.

MATHIEU-IGNACE VAN BRÉE ANVERS, 1773/1839 Presentation of the King of Rome to the City of Ghent Oil on canvas 85 x 60 cm Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée (1773/1839) was an Antwerp neo-classical painter. Inspired by political events, he produced many paintings of circumstances, allowing him to celebrate the French regimes in power in Belgium. He was awarded the second Prix de Rome of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1797 and was a professor at the Antwerp Academy of Painting from 1803 until his death. In our painting, Van Brée depicts the birth of Napoleon's son in 1811, which was celebrated with enthusiasm throughout the Empire. He places this scene in the city of Ghent, which can be recognised by the coat of arms on the right of the composition, and thus celebrates, through a rich allegory, the regime uniting Belgium and France at that time. Indeed, the composition of our painting is based around the newborn child presented by the allegory of France, recognisable by the eagle at her feet and the bees on her harness, to a young woman who we could identify as an allegory of the city of Ghent. Juno Lucina, goddess of childbirth, is staring at the scene. To the right of the composition, another allegory of the city of Ghent, identified by the coat of arms she is holding, is enjoining Clio, goddess of history, to record this memorable event on her history plates. The four figures at their feet, allegories of the liberal arts, fulfil the same role and celebrate the birth of the King of Rome with their work. Numerous other symbols refer to the prestige and prosperity brought by the birth of Napoleon's son. Overlooking the scene, a winged genie announces the birth and pours flowers and gold from his horn of plenty. To his left, Juno accompanied by her peacock symbolizes eternity. A she-wolf and the Tiber in the background are elements that refer to his title of King of Rome. Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée was the subject of a retrospective exhibition in Antwerp in 1849 and of detailed studies in the exhibition 1770/1830. Autour du Néo-Classicisme en Belgique at the Musée d'Ixelles in 1985. His work is particularly characteristic of the Belgian neo-classical style, of which Ghent was an important centre. A painting by Van Brée with a similar purpose, entitled Entrée de Bonaparte et de Joséphine à Anvers, le 18 juillet 1803, is currently in the Château de Versailles.

MATHIEU-IGNACE VAN BRÉE ANVERS, 1773/1839 Présentation du roi de Rome à la Ville de Gand Huile sur toile 85 x 60 cm Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée (1773/1839) est un peintre anversois néo-classique. Inspiré par les évènements politiques, il a produit de nombreux tableaux de circons­tances, lui permettant de célébrer les régimes français au pouvoir en Belgique. Il a été lauréat du deuxième Prix de Rome de l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1797 et profes­seur à l'Académie de peinture d'Anvers de 1803 jusqu'à sa mort. Dans notre tableau, Van Brée représente la nais­sance du fils de Napoléon en 1811, célébrée avec enthousiasme dans tout l'Empire. Il situe cette scène dans la ville de Gand que l'on reconnaît grâce aux armoiries à droite de la composition, et célèbre ainsi à travers une riche allégorie, le régime unissant alors la Belgique à la France. En effet, la composition de notre tableau s'articule autour du nouveau-né présenté par l'allégorie de la France, reconnaissable par l'aigle à ses pieds et par les abeilles sur son baudrier, à une jeune femme que nous pourrions identifier comme une allégorie de la ville de Gand. Junon Lucine, déesse des accouchements, fixe la scène. À droite de la composition, une autre allégorie de la ville de Gand, identifiée grâce au blason qu'elle tient, enjoint Clio, déesse de l'Histoire, à fixer cet évènement mémorable sur ses plaquettes d'Histoire. Les quatre personnages à leurs pieds, allégories des arts libéraux, remplissent le même rôle et célèbrent par leurs oeuvres la naissance du roi de Rome. De nombreux autres symboles renvoient au pres­tige et à la prospérité apportés par la naissance du fils de Napoléon. Surplombant la scène, un génie ailé annonce la naissance et déverse des fleurs et de l'or de sa corne d'abondance. A sa gauche, Junon accompagnée de son paon sym­bolise l'éternité. Une louve et le Tibre à l'arrière-plan sont des éléments qui renvoient quant à eux à son titre de roi de Rome. Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée a fait l'objet d'une exposition rétrospective en 1849 à Anvers et d'études détaillées dans le cadre de l'exposi­tion 1770/1830. Autour du Néo-Classicisme en Belgique au Musée d'Ixelles en 1985. Son oeuvre est particulièrement caractéristique du style néo-classique belge, dont Gand était un centre important. Un tableau de Van Brée à visée similaire intitulé Entrée de Bonaparte et de Joséphine à Anvers, le 18 juillet 1803 est actuellement conservé au Château de Versailles.

JEAN LOUIS VANIER Mémoires d'un soldat de la République 1792-1809 Un récit autobiographique dantesque dans lequel Jean Louis Vanier nous narre à travers un récit poignant ses campagnes. Alternant aventures, victoires et défaites, laissé pour mort sur un champ de bataille en Espagne, avant de connaître une longue retraite. On peut s'imprégner dans ce document inédit de la vie d'un soldat de la République et de l'Empire, de l'abnégation de ses hommes, de leur attachement fraternel entre beauté et carnage, sans cesse en mouvement. «Depuis 20 ans que je faisais la guerre, j'avais éprouvé déroutes, assauts, sièges et quantité de batailles, je n'avais pas encore vu pareil carnage dans si peu de temps.
