HIPPOLYTE BELLANGÉ PARIS, 1800/1866
Panoramic view of a presumed battle of Moscowa or Borodino
Oil on canvasSigned lower right h. Bellangé
65 x 98 cm
The Battle of Moskowa or Borodino, a particularly deadly confrontation, took place on September 7, 1812, 150 km from Moscow. It was the scene of bloody confrontations, with nearly 160,000 French soldiers facing just as many Russian soldiers. About this battle, Napoleon wrote: "Of the fifty battles I have fought, the most terrible was the one I fought before Moscow. The French had proved themselves worthy of victory, the Russians had won the right to be considered invincible. Thus, if Russian history retains the name "Borodino" in reference to the place itself, Napoleon preferred the term "Moscowa". Alluding to the river located towards Moscow more to the north of the fighting, it suggests phonetically that the clashes would have taken place under the very walls of the city. In just over fifteen hours, nearly 25,000 French and Russian soldiers fell on the battlefield.
