ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE DU XIXE SIÈCLE D'après Horace Vernet
The Barrière de Clichy. Defence of Paris, 30th March 1814
Engraving with white highlights 72.2 x 101 cm
This engraving was made after a large composition by Horace Vernet, painted in 1820 and now kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting was originally commissioned by the goldsmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot (1763/1850) because he himself had participated in the event. He can thus be seen next to Marshal Moncey (1754/1842).
In 1822, the work was refused at the Salon because Vernet was then the favourite painter of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, head of the opposition to King Louis XVIII.
