Eugène Leroy

Eugène Leroy (1910-2000) born in Tourcoing, devoted his whole life to drawing and painting. In 1927, when he discovered oil painting, he described it as "access to a will to happiness". In 1931, he began short studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lille, which he then continued in Paris. Despite numerous exhibitions throughout the world, his work remained unknown for a long time because of its singularity. Since the beginning of the 2000s, it has been the subject of a real re-reading by institutions, the market and a new generation of artists, among whom is the German painter Georg Baselitz who collects his works and contributes to the new recognition of his work.

The work Flowers is executed in 1963 is characteristic of the technique of the artist who accumulates and sculpts the material on the canvas to make forms emerge. The impastos are extravagant, and only the viewer's careful observation can distinguish the subject.
