Melody for voice and piano in Italian . The text is borrowed from an Italian madrigal of the Renaissance: "Alla riva del Tebro giovinetto"...
In D, at 6/8, marked Andantino, this madrigal has 77 bars.
The manuscript is very carefully noted in brown ink on 3 pages of an 18-line Italian-style bifeuillet. It is dated "April 1856", with the dedication: "to Mr. Delle Sedie". It was used for the engraving of the edition by G. Hartmann in 1870.
In 1898, Saint-Saëns published an arrangement for voice and piano of Palestrina's madrigal with Durand, which he had thought of using in his opera Ascanio.
The dedicatee is Enrico DELLE SEDIE (1822-1907), a famous Italian baritone, interpreter of Verdi, among others, and a renowned pedagogue.
