[The composer William MOLARD (1862-1936) had been Ravel's classmate at the Conservatoire| Paul Gauguin made his portrait. The letter relates to his symphony Hamlet, which had not been selected for the first orchestra concert of the Société Musicale Indépendante| their friend the painter and engraver Achille OUVRÉ (1872-1951), who left two portraits of Ravel, had unjustly accused Ravel of having voted against Molard's work].
I received a letter from Ouvré which amazes me: 1° He did not ask for Liabeuf's pardon because Hamlet was not played. 2° I am the cause that the symphony was not performed. I thought, in this affair, that I had shown myself to be, if not a better comrade than SCHMITT, at least not so rough and more efficient. I do not like equivocal situations. I demand from my colleagues that at the next committee meeting, Monday or Tuesday, you be received and that a general explanation
take place. I apologize for bothering you, but I believe that an old friendship, if it is not worth a man's head, is well worth the loss of a few minutes".... The integral, no. 341.
