Refrain de son Hymne à la France [H 97, Op.20 No.2], chorus on a poem by Auguste Barbier, composed in June-July 1844, and first performed in Paris, for the Festival de l'industrie, on August 1, 1844| it was published in 1851 in the collection Vox Populi.
This refrain, in 4 voices notated on a two-stave system, is 5 bars long, with the words: "Dieu protège la France Dieu protège la France"| it is marked Largo, in D at 2/2. Below, Berlioz has written and signed: "Refrain de l'Hymne à la France. Hector Berlioz".
On the same page, under Berlioz's music, Gaspare SPONTINI noted 5 measures for voice and piano with these words: "Je te salue ami qui sign Berlioz je te salue ami! "| in A, at 2/2, marked Largo non troppo. Under his signature "Spontini" he added: "Yes, I pray with you: may God protect France and Italy ! Then, whatever He pleases! Paris, this 30 9bre 1845 ".
On the back, two autograph pieces signed for piano: by Adolphe ADAM, 7 measures in A at 2/4, " Paris 30 8bre 1845 "| and by Ignaz MOSCHELES, Andante melanconico of 5 measures, in B minor at 2/4, " Paris this 1 November 1845 ".
