Although trained by a Western education and residing in France, Vietnamese culture still expresses itself constantly in his works. Le Bain is a perfect example. Taking up one of her favorite themes, motherhood, Mai Trung Thu honors an ordinary routine and sublimates the everyday. Multiplying references to her culture of origin, each element contributes to the tenderness of the scene. The decor with its pure lines is composed of a jar, a subtle reference to her country. The features of the young woman are those of a Vietnamese, delicate and fine. If the softness emanates from this work, however, the composition is not fixed. Indeed, the folds of the drying linen and the bath sheet brings a certain dynamism to this scene. Proud of his origins, the artist manages to offer the most beautiful of the subtle Western and Far Eastern interbreeding.
