The artwork Aigrettes et poissons rouges was conceived in 1927 when he experimented with the popular stamping process. This print is made in several original copies, marked with the stamp of the Hanoi School of Fine Arts. One of the prints, exhibited in Rome in 1931, was awarded the «Diploma of Merit» in 1932.
For the editions reserved for his relatives, the stamp of Nam Son is applied in addition to his signature. A few rare copies are still known, in particular the one which was exhibited at Cernuschi in 2012 and belongs to the Ngô Kim-Khôi Collection, the artist's grandson.
Some elements differ between the prints, such as the intensity of the ochre color as well as the stamp mark and the juxtaposed characters.
In this work, the artist demonstrates the virtuosity with which he manages to blend traditional techniques with Western modernity. Two graceful and elegant egrets stand on a branch above a stream. These are symbols of fidelity and longevity in Vietnamese traditions. The fish, represented with fine details, seem to perform a dance in union with the current. Stylized veg
