ROUAULT Georges (1871-1958)
Autograph letter signed and illustrated with two original drawings, addressed to Ambroise VOLLARD.
Paris, 1935, 5 pages in-4 in ink.
From 1916-1917, the famous publisher-merchant of Parisian paintings Ambroise Vollard becomes the exclusive publisher of Georges Rouault.
In this letter illustrated with two gouache drawings, Rouault reveals to Vollard the progress of his work. At Vollard's request, Rouault began work in 1932 on a large painter's book, Le Cirque de l'étoile filante. The artist evokes in this letter the "woods and etchings of the Circus". For this book, he will create 17 original etchings in colours outside the text, and 82 woods in the text.
The gouaches illustrating this letter are significant of the artist's work, with bright colours and the thick and dark outline of the figure.
