Set of three signed autograph letters addressed to the poet Lucie DELARUE-MARDRUS, concerning her novel The Immoralist. 1/ Autograph letter signed "A. Gi.", undated [1902], 2 pages in-8 in ink on a double sheet of laid paper. 2/ Autograph letter signed, undated [1902], 3 pages in-8 in ink on a double sheet of laid paper. One word crossed out and corrected in the sixth line of the second page. 3/ Autograph letter signed and dated "Cuverville June 23rd [1902]", 2 pages in-8 in ink on paper.
These three letters were addressed during the month of June 1902 to the poet Lucie Delarue-Mardrus (1874-1945) from the family property in Cuverville, Normandy. André Gide wrote them shortly after the first edition, of which only 300 copies were printed of his novel L'Immoraliste, published by the Mercure de France. The recipient had just begun her literary career with the collection of poems Ferveur (1902), which is mentioned in one of the letters.
It is true that the poetess had grasped the stakes of the book, writing in her article: "If we want to try to bring out the difficult moral of The Immoralist, let us say that, even by remaining impotent like Michel, it is useful, it is necessary that each man has the courage to go to the end of himself [...] And the only human crime, the only original sin, [is] the Lie.
