Nouvelles de France, dating from Télémaque’s African period, evokes a letter received from France in Africa in both its composition and colours. The brown band at the top of the canvas suggests the opening of an envelope, while the pencilled inscriptions reveal snatches of messages, sometimes in careful handwriting, sometimes scribbled spontaneously. The «news from France» is conjured up more directly by pieces of newspaper scattered over the canvas, but in orderly fashion, like the arrangement of the various messages that make up a letter. The texture and warm colour of Africa’s baked soil complement the crumpled, flattened French newspapers.
