PROVENANCE Galerie Jacqueline Moussion, Paris Private collection, Paris

In the 2000s, Télémaque began to take a new look at French political current affairs and turned to his African origins. He produced a series of works inspired by several trips to Africa, some with humorous overtones. They included this Final Study for the Great Fresco of the Omo Valley: a tribute to a region of Ethiopia. He still mingled his techniques, combining not only pencil and collage and black and white and colour, but also the figurative and the abstract. The two assembled sheets of paper evoke the endless expanse of the valley, itself reinforced by the three horizontal rows that structure the work. Each row features a figurative photograph, followed or preceded by a series of Surrealist elements, as if to suggest a gradual, mysterious transformation.
