La Roulette du Pont Neuf echoes Télémaque’s life in Paris. He expresses the hurly-burly of the city and the variety of Parisian scenes by superimposing collages, themselves in various media ranging from plain coloured paper to photographs, around which meander inscriptions in pencil. The vitality of Paris life is also suggested by the circular movement of the wheel, perhaps evoking those of bicycles, cars or even casinos. In addition, certain elements leap out from the circle, and even from the frame. The work appeals to the ear as well as the eye, through the small cassette in the upper left corner, the overall whirling movement or the shape of the circle, perhaps reminiscent of a CD.
Hervé Télémaque
Born in 1937 in Port au Prince, Hervé Télémaque has lived and worked in Paris since 1961.
When he was only 20, the artist left Haiti for New York, where he decided to join the Art Student’s League to study art. In this vibrant city, he discovered Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism as reinterpreted by the Americans, and above all Pop Art. When he arrived in France, he mixed with a great many Surrealist artists, but without joining the movement. He defended his desire to develop his own artistic approach, and devoted himself completely to collage and assemblage. He was associated with «narrative figuration» and artists like Bernard Rancillac and Eduardo Arroyo. He later returned to painting and drawing, in the 1980s. Through his works, the artist tries to arouse amazement in the viewer, while focusing on objects from everyday life. He seeks to open our senses to all the possibilities offered by an object despite its
