François-Xavier Lalanne
French sculptor and engraver François-Xavier Lalanne was born in Agen on 28 August 1927. He moved to Paris in 1949 and studied drawing, sculpture and painting at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. He rubbed shoulders with several artists, including Constantin Brancusi, René Magritte and Salvador Dali. Close to fashion circles, he and his friend Yves Saint Laurent, then Dior’s new assistant, decorated the brand’s new boutique on Avenue Montaigne. He also met Claude Dupeux, who soon became his companion. In 1956, they decided to work together. They got married in 1967.
The main features of his artistic output are animals, which he imaginatively and humorously used for utilitarian purposes. The Poule vase is a fine example of this. The couple displays a bestiary all over the world where creativity and fantasy have no bounds. Claude found more inspiration in plants, but FrançoisXavier was fascinated by animals. Their shapes, curves and fur were a bottomless source of creativity for him. Rhinoceroses, sheep, monkeys and even chickens became decorative features. Claude and François-Xavier both believed that art can be functional. Throughout their careers they strove to give sculpture a familiar and even a domestically useful dimension, creating funny, offbeat works that everyone very quickly wished to own.
