Claude Verlinde
Claude Verlinde is a French artist born in 1927 of Flemish origin: a source of inspiration, since he is very much influenced by Hieronymus Bosch and Cranach, as well as Francisco Goya. He has developed a lyrical, fantastic Renaissance style, but belongs to no movement and accepts being described as a "fantastic realist". His marvellous worlds abound with symbolic references to the passing of time, the vanity of existence and human vices, often tinged with humour. He plays with viewers, drawing them into his sphere without giving them all the keys. He cultivates a singular, visionary garden populated by creatures in metamorphosis. He himself lists his categories of characters according to poetic definitions, playing with words as he plays with images. "The Leader: the orator, eulogist of certified virtues, proclaims that the ardour of genuine worth, which is unclear, should drive the procession."
The artist notably evokes the theme of the mirror, separating the marvellous world below from the one it reflects above: our reality. The triptych of the Secret Gardens is an example of this: ordinary objects (a bed, boat hulls, a sculpted torso of a woman and candles) are depicted, yet metamorphosed into extraordinary, fantastical elements specific to the parallel world in which they were created. A simple boat shell becomes a cemetery, a flowery garden, a four-poster bed or a candle-lit pool. The curtains of the bed, as if suspended in the void, take the shape of a flower and the sculpted torso in the pool merges with its extension, evoking Magritte's Black Magic. No creature is painted in its entirety but constantly takes the form of another, as in a dream. The
