Iberê Camargo
Born in 1914 in Restinga Seca, Ibere Camargo was a Brazilian artist. After beginning art studies at a local school, he continued at the Institute of Fine Arts in Porto Alegre and completed them at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. He began his career as an engraver. His style was somewhat constructivist but still figurative. As time went on, he gradually turned from figuration to abstract expressionism, exploring form, colour and especially gesture. During this period, he applied paint boldly and vigorously on large formats. After a while, the figurative reappeared in his work, and uncertain anthropomorphic forms and even monstrous figures featured in his compositions, leaving viewers with a disconcerting feeling. A solitary figure, the artist always wanted to swim against the current ands deliberately distanced himself from the style of his contemporaries.
The work presented today, a self-portrait of the artist , is a speaking example of his work. Dating from the end of his career, it is a poignant testimony to Camargo's spirit, where the colours, the lines and the dynamic energy that went into the application of the paint give the painting extraordinary expressiveness. Through this work, the artist asserted himself as a key figure in Brazilian expressionism.
Shortly after his death, his wife decided to create the Iberê Camargo Foundation to preserve and promote his work. Numerous events, seminars and conferences are regularly staged in this lively venue to further reflection on contemporary art works.
