JESÚS RAFAEL SOTO
Born 1923 in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, Jesús Rafael Soto is an emblematic figure in Op Art and kinetic art. He trained at the Plastic and Applied Arts School in Caracas and taught in Maracaibo before flying to Paris in 1950, remaining there for the rest of his life.
His work is based on the viewer's visual perceptions and movement. He studied optical vibrations that modify space as well as the possibilities of colour and played with lines, shapes, background, foreground and all aspects of chromatic planes in order to induce movement in his works. In 1955 he took part in the "Movement" show at the Denise René gallery and exhibited his works alongside those of Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder and Victor Vasarely. This event is still deemed a turning point in kinetic art. In 1958 he created the first of his Vibraciones, paintings that produce optical effects when the viewer moves through a play of superimposed lines and geometric features. By the late 1960s his research on movement and perception had led him to his Penetrables, installations made of wires or flexible materials that are activated when the viewer passes by or interacts with someone else.
Several shows have recently focused on Soto, including "Jesús Rafael Soto. A Retrospective" at the Soulages Museum in Rodez, France in 2015, "Soto. The Fourth Dimension" at the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum in 2019 and “Blue BBL Penetrable” at the Vuitton Space in Tokyo.
