Le Pho gradually developed an interest in oils on canvas, and this became an alternative to the longer, more delicate technique of painting on silk. This development enabled him to explore a more gesture-based, immediate expression and a more varied chromatic density. Maternité n° 248 clearly reveals the influence of the Impressionists and Nabis on Le Pho’s work. The alert, rhythmic touch and light pervading this work are highly representative.
Remaining faithful to his origins, here the artist shows a child being embraced by his mother, who wears a white turban: a typical feature of traditional Vietnamese dress. Thus, despite a modern technique inspired by European art movements, Le Pho illustrates his attachment to his Vietnamese culture.
