Placed near a window on a table, this Bouquet of Flowers creates a strong contrast between the subdued decoration and its bright colours. The delicate flower petals evince considerable virtuosity through the play on different shades of purple, and the artist’s talent is also revealed in the subtle rendering of the transparent vase. Through a skilful composition, he breathes freedom and vitality into the traditionally static still life genre, as the radiant yellow stems rise up the canvas and escape the frame created by the window, creating delicate, imperceptible curves. The window, opening outwards, reveals a sprig of small white flowers that add to the bouquet through the play on perspective. The artist thus mixes untrammelled and domesticated nature.
