WAGNER RICHARD (1813-1883)

L.A.S. "M.W." (minute for his wife Minna Wagner),[Zurich, November 4, 1854], to the Intendant General von
HÜLSEN, of the Prussian Court Theatre]| 2 oblong pages in-8 filled with tight writing, under a green morocco shirt| in German.
Request written on behalf of his wife to return from exile to a Tannhäuser production in Berlin.
In exile since his participation in the revolutionary movement of May 1849, Wagner was not granted an amnesty until 1861| he did not attend the Tannhauser given in Berlin on 7 January 1856. Minna Wagner, in Germany in September and October 1854, met with von

She takes the liberty of keeping the Bursar informed of the case she recently spoke to him about in person. The best thing would be to get her husband himself to come to Berlin, because then the previous condition would become superfluous.
She therefore decided to travel directly from Weimar to Dresden to obtain from the highest authorities that her husband be allowed to return to Germany. As she had the support of a letter from the Grand Duke of Weimar to the King of Saxony, she succeeded in getting his request well received| however, she was told that political acts such as a pardon could not be accomplished in less than a quarter.
If the Intendant General really wants to set up Tannhauser this winter, he might be better able to make it possible, if he would be kind enough to send a request to the competent authorities in Dresden, to know if they would oppose Wagner's coming to Berlin for a few weeks, right now, to
