MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY Felix (1809-1847)

Autograph MUSICAL MANUSCRIT, Aerndtelied, 24 January 1827| 1 page and a half in-fol. of a bifoliate (33 x 24 cm| some very slight freckles).
Beautiful lied of youth.
The manuscript ends with the date "d. 24 Januar 1827". Aerndtlied or Erntlied (Song of Harvest)[op. 8, no. 4] was therefore composed at the age of eighteen (less a few days), and published around June 1827 in the Zwolf Gesange mit Begleit of the Pianoforte in Berlin, which bears the opus number 8.
This song for voice and piano consists of six verses. The lyrics, taken from a popular song, are taken from the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1806) compiled by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano: "Es ist ein Schmitter, der heißt Tod/Hat Gewalt vom höchsten Gott"... (There is a reaper called Death, her power comes from God the Most High...). The setting to music is deliberately simple and simple, but touching.
The manuscript is carefully written in brown ink on 16-line paper, with some minor corrections.
The lied is marked Andante, in C, at 4 beats. Mendelssohn wrote the music and lyrics for the first verse (18 bars), with the first bar of the second verse. He copied the text of the words of verses 2 to 5. Then he set to music (22 bars) the last verse where some delicate alterations take place that break with the strophic form for the final.
At the top of the score, the young composer wrote: "H. D. m" (Hilf Du mir), which means: "Help me", imploring God's help.
