Carl GOLDMARK (1830-1915), of Hungarian origin, composed six operas, including Die Konigin von Saba (1875) and Merlin (1886). Gustav Mahler had given a new production of Konigin von
Saba at the Vienna Opera on 29 April 1901| the work will be resumed, in a renovated production with Slezak, on 25 May 1904.]
He is preparing for Christmas a performance of Saba with Slezak[tenor Leo SLEZAK (1873-1946)] in the role of Assad and Schubert[soprano Betty SCHUBERT (1876-1930)] for the Queen. On this occasion, he also wants to do the opening duo of Act IV[which had been cut until then]. - Merlin can only be distributed with Slezak| the note was definitely premature. On the contrary, he would recommend a first in Frankfurt, as this could be advantageous for the representation in Vienna... "Ich bereite für Weihnachten eine Aufführung von den Saba vor mit Slezak als Assad und der Schubert als "Königin". Bei diesen Gelegenheit will ich auch das Anfangsduett des IV. Aktes machen. - Merlin kann nur mit Slezak gegeben werden| die Note war daher entschieden verfrüht. Ich bitte wegen Frankfurt ganz ohne
Rücksicht zu entscheiden, ganz im Gegentheil würde ich eine Erstaufführung in Frankfurt befürworten, weil man daraus Vortheile für die hiesige Aufführung ziehen könnte"...
