Francis Marion CRAWFORD (1854-1909) was an American novelist, famous for his Gothic Horror novels. He lived in Italy and spent considerable time in India.
Stevenson writes : “I sail in some forty hours back among the islands, which are now more homelike in my eyes that the world to which I once belonged […] I do not know you : it is likely we shall never meet, and I think it most improbable that my literature may be abominable in your eyes…”. He signs “Your admirer”. A very lengthy post-scriptum is copied on the verso of the letter. He tells his correspondent that his books will travel and “they will be read in a better climate and in lonelier places…”
