Taken by the photographer GRAVELLE, the sepia photograph shows Bert A. DENICKE and LINDBERGH in jackets and ties standing alongside a third, unidentified man, in front of Lindbergh’s Sikorski S-38 amphibious bi-plane.
In early 1929 Lindbergh delivered the first airmail between North and South America aboard a Sikorsky S-36 (finding the amphibious plane better suited for an underdeveloped region) and continued to pioneer many routes for both Transcontinental Air Transport and Pan-American Airways. The photograph captures Lindbergh as he inaugurated the seven-day airmail service at the end of April and beginning of May 1930. The 7,000-mile route, which he flew in a Sikorsky S-38, began in Miami, and stopped in Cristobal, the Canal Zone| Havana, Cuba| and Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua before arriving in Buenos Aries, Argentina. To make the trip, Lindbergh flew more than 1,000 miles per day, returning to Roosevelt Field on May 3, 1930.
