Porsche 911 (996): The Modern Renaissance of an Icon
After the well-deserved success of the 911 type 993, Porsche undertook a real revolution with the 996, marking a significant change: the flat-six engine would no longer be air-cooled but water-cooled! Indeed, the new flagship model from the Stuttgart firm featured a completely revamped engine. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997, the 996 was undeniably the most modern of all the 911s while still retaining much of the tradition that forms its DNA. Naturally, the reception among purists was mixed, but it is thanks to these changes that the 911 remains one of the best sports cars in the world today. Everything in this 911 is new, starting with the design, which is much more modern. The flat-six engine in the 996 now produces 300 horsepower from 3.4 liters, and it is available with a new six-speed manual gearbox or the Tiptronic S five-speed automatic. Initially offered as the Carrera 2, the car was soon available as the Carrera 4 and a convertible. The 996 now reaches 280 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just five seconds. It is equipped with a next-generation ABS system and was the first Porsche to feature Porsche Stability Management (PSM), an electronic traction control system.
Inside, tradition once again blends with modernity. The five gauges are still present, but they are now intertwined. The ignition remains on the left side of the steering wheel, and ergonomics have significantly improved, as has sound insulation. The build quality, true to its German roots, is exceptional, and the modern equipment includes GPS, power seats with memory, cruise control, and numerous airbags. The 996 evolved into a phase 2 version introduced in 2001, which returned to a 3.6-liter engine and incorporated some technical innovations. It was eventually replaced by the 997, introduced in 2004, which benefited from many of the 996’s technical advancements.
