Mercedes-Benz 190 SL: Estimates & Market Value

A glamorous “little sister” to the 300 SL

Unveiled 60 years ago at the New York Motor Show in February 1954, the 190 SL long lived in the shadow of its legendary predecessor, the coveted 300 SL. Yet this beautifully built roadster was a genuine success in its own right. Under the influence of Max Hoffman, Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. importer, the brand developed a car that echoed the 300 SL’s lines while offering more comfort at a more accessible price.

The 190 SL was engineered from a lightly modified version of the Type 180 “Ponton” saloon platform. Its new independent suspension with coil springs, introduced on the 180, was carried over to the 190 SL as well.

Powertrain and character

Unlike the 300 SL, the 190 SL did not receive a six-cylinder. Instead, it used a modern 1,897 cc four-cylinder with twin Solex carburetors, producing 105 hp at 5,700 rpm, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. While not a pure sports car, this package gave the 190 SL lively, agreeable performance.

Stylistically close to the 300 SL, the 190 SL was conceived as a two-seat cabriolet. Period options included a removable hardtop and a transverse “jump” seat for occasional three-person use. Impeccable presentation, solid fit and finish, and well-mannered road behavior helped ensure success. The car appealed to both men and women, and notable owners included Grace Kelly and Miles Davis.

Beautiful and reliable, the 190 SL enjoyed a strong run: 1955–1963, with 25,881 examples produced. Paradoxically, it was likely more profitable for Mercedes-Benz than the 300 SL.
