Founded in 1863 in Limoges, at the heart of the historic cradle of French porcelain, the Bernardaud manufactory has established itself today as an essential leader in the world of tableware and luxury goods. Léonard Bernardaud: Founder and International Expansion of the Brand.

The journey began with Léonard Bernardaud, who started as an apprentice at a factory before becoming its owner in 1900. He purchased the factory where he worked in 1900 and named it after himself. He modernized production and expanded the brand internationally, particularly into the United States. Under his leadership, the company combined artisanal expertise with technical innovation—a hallmark that remains to this day.

A Family-Owned Business Facing the Challenges of the 20th Century: Crisis and Renewal.

His sons, Jacques and Michel Bernardaud, took over the business and carried on his legacy, despite the hardships of the 1929 crisis and World War II. In the 1950s, after the war, the company adopted modern techniques and maintained its international reputation, notably by producing an exceptional tableware set for Queen Elizabeth II’s official visit to France in April 1957, as well as for other prestigious figures such as the Prince and Princess of Liège, for whom a dedicated set was created in 1959, the year of their marriage.
