Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu (1921 - 2012) established himself as one of the leading figures in 20th-century abstract art. His paintings are widely recognized in the art market, among experts, modern and contemporary art museums, galleries, and auction houses, and are highly valued by collectors alongside works by other major artists.

Born on January 27, 1921, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, and passing away on June 10, 2012, in Boulogne-Billancourt, Georges Mathieu initially pursued legal studies before abandoning them in 1942 to focus on the visual arts.

Following World War II, as Europe was rebuilding, art was undergoing a transformation. In 1947, art critic Jean José Marchand coined the term "lyrical abstraction" when discussing Mathieu’s paintings.

Mathieu opposed geometric abstraction, freeing himself from classical constraints and traditions. His rapid, gestural brushstrokes conveyed strong emotion rather than an exact representation of reality. His forms were sharp and precise, emphasizing expression over realism.

In 1957, Mathieu spent several months in Japan, where he deeply explored its aesthetic and pictorial traditions. He was particularly drawn to the ancient practice of calligraphy, which dates back to 206 BCE during the Han dynasty, later developed by Buddhist monks.

While Mathieu was inspired by East Asian calligraphy, he used the beauty and poetry of gesture for a completely different purpose. Eastern calligraphy is closely tied to religion and carries a deep spiritual significance. In contrast, Mathieu’s compositions were built from abstract signs, stripped of inherent meaning. He explained that meaning is reconstructed mentally by the viewer, rather than being inherent to the sign itself. It was this negation of the sign as a signifier that led André Malraux to call Mathieu a “Western calligrapher.”
