Germaine Richier Guerrier n°3, 1953 Germaine Richier, a French sculptor of international renown, was part of the renewal of sculpture alongside Alberto Giacometti and Marino Marini. After a classical training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, she joined Antoine Bourdelle's studio in 1926, where she met Alberto Giacometti, who was being taught by the master between 1922 and 1925. Her early works are quite academic and she works particularly the bust. Throughout her life, she relied on triangulation, a method applied by Bourdelle that allows the form to be divided into triangles by drawing on the living model. The importance of joints as axes of construction and form is a lesson from Matisse that she assimilated| the markers she traces on her drawings indicate the structure of the skeleton, and numerous lines grid the bodies. Germaine Richier received recognition from artistic circles in her youth, and was awarded the medal of honor at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris, and participated in the 1939 New York International Fair. During the war, she left Paris to settle in Zurich. It is from 1940, that a new aesthetic is announced in his production with the sculpture Le Crapaud which mixes the man and the animal. She moves away from the illusionist tradition to tend towards new modes of figuration generated by the socio-political context of the war. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Man's very essence is called into question. Humanist values had collapsed, and several artists were working to construct a new vision of humanity. In 1953, Germaine Richier moved to Saint-Tropez and this period marked a renewal in her approach. Le Guerrier n°3 belongs to this very particular production. Germaine Richier uses the material to bring mystery and strangeness to her sculptures. The sharp angles and edges of this figure refer to its warrior nature, thus leaving this work in the field of figuration. Bourdelle's teaching and Rodin's legacy are visible in this work, which places it in a continuity of figurative sculpture, while making undeniable stylistic and thematic breaks.  "We are, whether we like it or not, delicate and mysterious machines, and that's the way it is." — wrote Germaine Richier in a letter to Franz Hellens

Après une formation classique à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier, elle intègre l’atelier d’Antoine Bourdelle à partir de 1926 où elle croise Alberto Giacometti qui recevait les enseignements du maître entre 1922 et 1925. Ses œuvres de jeunesse sont assez académiques et elle travaille particulièrement le buste. Tout au long de sa vie, elle s’appuiera sur la triangulation, méthode appliquée par Bourdelle qui permet de diviser la forme en triangle par le dessin sur le modèle vivant. L’importance des articulations en tant qu’axes de construction et de la forme est une leçon de Matisse qu’elle a assimilé| les repères qu’elle trace sur ses dessins indiquent la structure du squelette, et de nombreuses lignes quadrillent les corps. Germaine Richier bénéficie dès sa jeunesse de la reconnaissance des milieux artistiques, elle reçoit la médaille d’honneur de l’Exposition universelle de 1937 à Paris, et participe à la foire internationale de New York de 1939. Durant la guerre, elle quitte Paris pour s’installer à Zurich. C’est à partir de 1940, qu’une nouvelle esthétique s’annonce dans sa production avec la sculpture Le Crapaud qui mêle l’homme et l’animal. Elle s’éloigne de la tradition illusionniste pour tendre vers de nouveaux modes de figuration engendrés par le contexte socio-politique de la guerre. Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’Homme est remis en question dans son essence même. Les valeurs humanistes se sont effondrées, et plusieurs artistes travaillent à la construction d’une nouvelle vision de l’humanité. En 1953, Germaine Richier est installée à Saint-Tropez et cette période marque un renouveau dans son approche. Le Guerrier n°3 appartient à cette production très particulière. Germaine Richier se sert de la matière pour apporter mystère et étrangéité à ses sculptures. Les angles pointus et les arêtes aiguisées de cette figure nous renvoient à sa nature guerrière, laissant donc cette œuvre dans le champ de la figuration. L’enseignement de Bourdelle et l’héritage de Rodin sont visibles dans cette œuvre qui l’inscrit dans une continuité de la sculpture figurative, tout en y opérant des ruptures stylistiques et thématiques indéniables.  « Nous sommes, qu’on le veuille ou non, des machines délicates et mystérieuses et c’est bien ainsi. » — écrivait Germaine Richier dans une lettre à Franz Hellens

Hans Arp S'élevant, 1962 Hans Peter Wilhelm Arp, also known as Jean Arp, was a painter and sculptor from Strasbourg who loved volumes and reliefs. As a student of Fine Arts in Weimar, the artist discovered a thirst for discovery and turned away from his teaching. From 1916, his name resounds in Zurich next to that of Tristan Tzara, among the founders of the Dada movement. "In his studio, word, form and color merged and were transformed into fabulous, unheard of, never seen worlds. Jean Arp plays on words and frees himself from the traditional forms of art. A surrealist from the beginning, Arp elaborated his "Arpadian encyclopedia", which was exempt from the laws of composition and tried the dogma of chance. At the origin of the abstraction-creation group, the artist produced sculptures from 1930, inspired by the spontaneity of nature, which he abandoned in the forest, with the aim of being discovered. As a true poet of organic forms, "S'élevant" is a continuation of Jean Arp's sculptures in the round. Wang Yancheng Automne rouge sur la forêt, 2004 Wang Yancheng was born in 1960 in the province of Guangdong, China. A Franco-Chinese painter, he acquired a Western academic training at the Shandong Fine Arts School, with Chinese artists who had returned from their travels in Europe. Divided between France and China, Yancheng exhibited and was noticed in 1996, at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. Two years after his rise to prominence with French critics, his works entered Chinese public collections, more specifically the Shenzhen Museum of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts Museum of China in Beijing. In the 1990s, admiring Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun, Wang Yancheng visited Saint-Etienne for the first time. His work is an affirmation of the heritage of lyrical abstraction that he received from these artists. In 2010, the Musée de Montparnasse devoted a retrospective to him, exhibiting a series of recent works, which were later exhibited in Beijing. Nature is paramount in Yancheng's paintings and is the main focus of his exploration of his subjects. Mountains, oceans and deserts are suggested by a palette of natural colors and organic forms, which act as a transmitter of feelings. He develops in his compositions, a pictorial freedom that allows him to retranscribe in a direct way his individual emotions.

PROVENANCE Collection privée, région bordelaise Wang Yancheng Automne rouge sur la forêt, 2004 Wang Yancheng naît en 1960 dans la province du Guangdong, en Chine. Peintre franco-chinois, il acquiert une formation académique occidentale aux Beaux-Arts de Shandong, auprès d’artistes chinois revenus de voyage en Europe. Partagé entre France et Chine, Yancheng expose et se fait remarquer en 1996, au Salon d’automne de Paris. Deux ans après l’ascension qui le fait éclore auprès de la critique française, ses œuvres entrent dans les collections publiques chinoises, plus spécifiquement au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Shenzhen et au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chine, à Pékin. Dans les années 1990, admiratif de Zao Wou-Ki et Chu Teh-Chun, Wang Yancheng séjourne Saint-Etienne pour la première fois. Son travail est l’affirmation de l’héritage de l’abstraction lyrique qu’il reçoit de ces artistes. En 2010, le Musée de Montparnasse lui consacre une rétrospective exposant une série d’œuvres récentes, qui seront par la suite exposées à Pékin. Primordiale dans la peinture de Yancheng, la nature est prépondérante à l’exploration de ses sujets. Les montagnes, océans et déserts, son suggérés par une palette aux teintes naturelles et aux formes organiques, qui agissent en transmetteur de sentiments. Il développe dans ses compositions, une liberté picturale qui lui permet de retranscrire de façon directe ses émotions individuelles.

Alexander Calder Alexander "Sandy" Calder, American sculptor and painter, is widely known for his mobiles and assemblages of forms animated by air movements and his stabiles. The genesis of his career as a sculptor led him to the 1927 "Humorists' Show," where he exhibited articulated toys, before building the Calder Circus of his wire figures. His first drawings were published in the New York press, illustrating various sporting events, urban scenes or circus, whose theme is dear to his work. An artist of shapes and a lithographer of color, the majority of his work intertwines primary colors in geometric or organic compositions. His totally abstract compositions give the illusion of a wire drawing, as were his first works.

Ses premiers dessins sont publiés dans la presse New Yorkaise, illustrant divers évènements sportifs, scènes urbaines ou de cirque, dont la thématique est chère à son œuvre. Artiste des formes et lithographe de la couleur, la majorité de son travail entrelace les couleurs primaires dans des compositions aux modelés géométriques ou organiques. Ses compositions totalement abstraites donnent l’illusion d’un dessin au tracé au fil de fer, comme l’étaient ses premières œuvres.

Jean Dubuffet A major figure in 20th century contemporary art, Jean Dubuffet played a pioneering role after the war as the founder of Art Brut. Based on the theories that he developed extensively in his writings, Jean Dubuffet proposed the notion of "anti-culture". Alongside his friends of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut, founded at the Galerie Drouin in 1947, he sought to produce works "free of all artistic culture". When he died in 1985, Jean Dubuffet left behind a body of work of exceptional quality and innovation, having almost single-handedly invented a concept and a style. His pictorial, plastic and monumental productions are preserved in the greatest institutions and private collections in the world, making Jean Dubuffet one of the essential artists of the 20th century. A tireless traveler, he went to Switzerland, the Sahara and New York in search of atypical works and inspirations. Back in Paris, Dubuffet began several parallel series in 1952, including the Assemblages d'Empreintes. Marcheur en montagne (Walker in the mountains) sums up Dubuffet's approach during this period| this work was also exhibited at his 1960 retrospective in Paris. In 1953, the artist produced works in ink on paper and cut them out in all shapes and sizes, then assembled them, thus creating a subject, by chance of gesture and materials.

André LANSKOY (1902-1976) Méli-Mélo endiablé, 1964 Oil on canvas, signed lower left, titled and dated on reverse 81 x 65 cm 31 57/64 x 25 19/32 in. André Lanskoy André Lanskoy was born in 1902 into an aristocratic Russian family. When the revolution broke out, he joined the White Army. The artist went into permanent exile in France in the spring of 1921. Upon his arrival in Paris, he took private classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and received the support of the very important Russian community living in the capital at the time, including Michail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. In 1923, he exhibited with Sonia Delaunay, Ossip Zadkine, Léopold Survage, Chaïm Soutine and Victor Barte at the Galerie de la Licorne. The painter was selected the same year to participate in the Salon d'Automne, where he was spotted by the art dealer Wilhem Udhe. Wilhem Udhe bought a few paintings from him and worked to make the young man's work known to Parisian galleries. In 1937, André Lanskoy and his peers discovered the work of Klee and Kandinsky at the exhibition entitled "Origins and Development of Independent Art". The event was a real artistic shock for Lanskoy, who then began non-figurative research. In the early 1950s, the painter's work acquired an international dimension when Louis Carré exhibited it in his New York gallery. The artist became a key player in the revival of abstraction between 1950 and 1960 and exhibitions followed one another. Méli-Mélo endiablé painted in 1964 is part of the second part of the artist's life where he becomes resolutely abstract. The paintings produced at this time place him among the main representatives of lyrical abstraction − which is characterized by a spontaneous style and gestures − and confirms his place within the second school of Paris where he will become a mentor for some other artists. The artist makes the interaction between forms and colors his main research. Here, on a very dark background, the shapes that stand out give free rein to the imagination.

Bellini, Galleria d'arte Due Bi, Galleria Michelangelo,2003 André Lanskoy André Lanskoy est né en 1902 au sein d’une famille aristocratique russe. Quand la révolution éclate, il s’engage dans l’Armée blanche. L’artiste s’exile définitivement en France au printemps 1921. À son arrivée à Paris, il suit des cours privés à l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière et reçoit le soutien de la très forte communauté russe qui habite alors la capitale et fréquente notamment Michaïl Larionov et Natalia Gontcharova. En 1923, il expose avec Sonia Delaunay, Ossip Zadkine, Léopold Survage, Chaïm Soutine ou encore Victor Barte à la galerie de la Licorne. Le peintre est sélectionné la même année afin de participer au Salon d’Automne, où il est repéré par le marchand de tableaux Wilhem Udhe. Ce dernier lui achète quelques tableaux et s’emploie à faire connaître l’œuvre du jeune homme auprès des galeries parisiennes. En 1937, André Lanskoy et ses pairs découvrent le travail de Klee et Kandinsky lors de l’exposition intitulée « Origines et développement de l’art indépendant ». L’évènement constitue un véritable choc artistique pour Lanskoy, qui amorce alors des recherches non figuratives. Au début des années 1950, l’œuvre du peintre acquière une dimension internationale lorsque Louis Carré l’expose dans sa galerie de New York. L’artiste devient un acteur clé du renouveau de l’abstraction entre 1950 et 1960 et les expositions vont se succéder. La toile Méli-Mélo endiablé peinte en 1964 s’inscrit dans la seconde partie de la vie de l’artiste où il devient résolument abstrait. Les toiles produites à cette époque l’inscrivent parmi les principaux représentants de l’abstraction lyrique, qui se caractérise par un style et une gestuelle spontanée, confirmant ainsi sa place au sein de la seconde école de Paris où il deviendra un mentor pour certains. L’artiste fait de l’interaction entre les formes et les couleurs sa principale recherche. Ici, sur un fond très foncé, les formes qui se détachent laissent libre court à l’imagination.
