Le marchand André Romanet découvre le travail de Lê Phổ en 1941 lorsque des oeuvres de ce dernier sont présentées par la galerie Lorenceau à Vichy. André Romanet rencontre alors l’artiste et devient son galeriste.
Propriétaire de la galerie d’Art Pasteur à Alger et d’une autre galerie à Oran, il organise deux expositions : une première en 1942, où il montre les oeuvres de Lê Phổ et Mai Trung Thứ, et une seconde en 1944 où il ajoute des oeuvres de Vũ Cao Đàm. La lettre a été acquise à cette période, en Algérie, et transmise familialement depuis.

The merchant André Romanet discovered Lê Phổ's work in 1941 when some of his pieces were exhibited by the Lorenceau Gallery in Vichy. André Romanet then met the artist and became his gallery owner. Owner of the Galerie d'Art Pasteur in Algiers and another gallery in Oran, he organized two exhibitions: the first in 1942, showing works by Lê Phổ and Mai Trung Thứ, and the second in 1944, adding works by Vũ Cao Đàm. La lettre was acquired during this period in Algeria and has been in the family ever since.
