1972 Coupe de France

On June 4, 1972, the Parc des Princes hosted a prestigious clash between Olympique de Marseille and Sporting Étoile Club Bastia. In front of more than 44,000 spectators, this Coupe de France final confirmed Marseille’s dominance over French football in the early 1970s. After an intense encounter, OM secured a 2–1 victory and claimed their eighth Coupe de France title.

From the opening minutes, Marseille imposed a high tempo. The pace of Roger Magnusson on the wing and the presence of Josip Skoblar in the penalty area quickly put Bastia’s defense under pressure. In the 15th minute, Marseille’s dominance paid off: following a precise cross from the right, Didier Couécou rose above his marker and headed the ball home with unstoppable precision. Marseille opened the scoring and logically took control of the match.

Bastia, however, refused to give in. Well organized and disciplined, the Corsican side looked to counterattack, relying on the determination of their captain Georges Franceschetti to keep hopes alive. Yet Marseille’s solid and experienced defense contained the attacks, allowing OM to maintain their lead going into halftime.

After the break, Marseille continued to control proceedings. Ball circulation remained fluid, attacks multiplied, and in the 73rd minute the decisive moment arrived. Ever opportunistic inside the box, Josip Skoblar doubled the lead and appeared to seal the outcome of the final. At 2–0, OM seemed safely ahead.

The closing minutes nevertheless delivered one final moment of suspense. Five minutes from time, Georges Franceschetti capitalized on a chaotic situation to reduce the deficit with a determined strike. Bastia pulled back to 2–1, briefly reviving excitement among the Paris crowd. But Marseille, drawing on their experience, calmly managed the final moments until the referee’s final whistle.

This victory crowned an exceptional season for Mario Zatelli’s men, who achieved the league and cup double that year. Superior in both efficiency and collective control, Marseille made the difference at decisive moments. From that evening of June 4, 1972, the names of Couécou and Skoblar for Marseille, and Franceschetti for Bastia, remain remembered as the scorers of a final that left a lasting mark on the history of the Coupe de France.
