This 51st auction of the department dedicated to Modern Asian Art reflects the support of Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier, expert, for the work of Vietnamese and Chinese artists. Indeed, these generations deserve greater recognition: their rediscovery in recent years is part of a growing movement to promote modern Asian art, whose appeal continues to increase among both collectors and institutions.
As early as 1931, thanks to the efforts of Victor Tardieu, who exhibited his work at the magnificent Colonial Exhibition held in Vincennes, Mai Trung Thứ began to make a name for himself in France. In the years that followed, after returning to Indochina, he submitted his works to various exhibitions in Paris, Rome, Hué, and Hanoi. Many of his works, created while he was teaching drawing in Hué, depict the same model, a beautiful young woman with a serious expression whom he would come to fall in love with, Mademoiselle Phuong.
