Miró, Constellations: a series of gouaches painted in exile.
Miró began this series of gouaches in September 1940, while fleeing Franco’s Spain for Normandy. He took about ten of them with him to the Spanish border, where he completed the last gouache in September 1941. Miró chose New York gallery owner Pierre Matisse to exhibit 22 of the gouaches, wishing to keep the last composition for himself.

PARÉ, Ambroise (1510–1590).
A collection of 82 original documents, 16th–18th centuries, titled ‘Titres Le Charron’ on the spine; a substantial folio volume bound in red morocco leather, with cold-stamped piping and a gilded marquis crown on the covers, and lace lining.
Constellations, 1959: the original Miró & Breton edition.
This first edition, offered at auction, brings together 22 reproductions of gouaches printed in Daniel Jacomet’s studios “in a format very close to the original,” each accompanied on the reverse by a facsimile of a drawing by Miró, the title of the gouache, and the place and date of its creation—a requirement the artist had insisted upon as early as 1957. The 22 works are paired with poems by André Breton and arranged in the chronological order of their creation, in accordance with the artist’s instructions given at the time of the 1945 exhibition.

Miró, Constellations No. 233/350: signed edition with lithograph and autograph drawing.
The origin of the title Constellations remains unknown: it appears neither in the correspondence between Miró and Matisse nor in the documents published at the time.
The copy presented here is No. 233 of 350, printed on Arches vellum and signed by Miró and André Breton. This work is also one of those that includes an original color lithograph by Miró, numbered and signed in pencil (No. 233/350), printed in the Mourlot Frères workshops. Most notably, the reverse side of the certificate features a signed dedication by Miró reading “For Peter,” accompanied by a large original color drawing.
