Highly esteemed by the physicians of his time and personal surgeon to Henry II, Ambroise Paré (1510–1590) is considered the founder of modern surgery.

To date, no trace had been found. It is on the reverse side of his first marriage contract, discovered in a family collection dedicated to his Le Charron descendants, that an autograph note by Ambroise Paré is found—the one and only known today. Paulmier, who conducted a study on this battlefield surgeon, wrote:

It is known that, with the exception of his signature, no autograph of the great surgeon is known to exist. We have had the rare fortune of discovering a specimen of his handwriting (...) It is the only autograph of the great surgeon that we know of.”
